GhostShips is a band consisting of Australian noir troubadour Michael Plater and Mark Kluzek and Stafford Glover from Australian/Anglo doom folk ensemble The Doomed Bird of Providence. GhostShips write songs about shipwrecked sailors, abandoned lighthouses, maritime mysteries and all kinds of preternatural phenomena and hark back to 80s/90s period Australian songwriters (the band name is derived from the song of the same title by legendary Brisbane band The Saints).

On this, their debut release, vocal duties are held by Plater. His distinct style leads us through the accompaniments featuring accordion, piano, drums by Kluzek, bass by Glover, guitar by Plater, a string section by regular Doomed Bird contributor Angela Chan and guest percussion from Tony Millman.

The songs reflect the aforementioned preoccupations of the writers. “Descending Through Dark,” was written by Kluzek and is a reflection on a ghost ship’s passengers and what becomes of them. Plater’s “The Alchemist,” meanwhile, was written in Prague in 2016 under the influence of the city’s rich occult history.

Various parts were recorded in Melbourne, Colchester, Southend and London. It was mastered by Mark Beazley of Trace Recordings. It’s a work that amalgamates a great love for Australian song writing of a certain period with the influences that push Kluzek, Plater and Glover on their current creative paths.
